Nancy Epling, artist and studio manager at Passion Works Studio, 20 E. State Street, Athens, Ohio, works on her last day at the studio, November 6, 2024, before returning to Licking County Jail to complete a 30-day sentence. Epling, among a group of activists, took part in a protest at Boeing’s facility in Heath, Ohio, in March 2024. The demonstration aimed to disrupt Boeing’s operations in protest of its role as a defense contractor supplying arms to Israel. Protesters blocked entrances and used suspension techniques to halt operations, leading to significant delays and arrests. Five individuals, including Epling, were charged with disorderly conduct and inducing panic. Prosecutors are seeking heightened penalties, including jail time and $300,000 in restitution for alleged lost profits. This response has drawn attention due to Ohio’s political stance against anti-Israel boycotts and its strong economic ties to Israel, raising concerns about suppressing future protests.
