360 Documentary

STABLE

A 360° Immersive Documentary

From my MFA thesis project Reframing Stability: Family Life Amidst Childhood Brain Tumor

What does it mean for a child to be medically stable when everyday life remains uncertain?

STABLE is a 360° documentary that explores the realities of family life following a child’s brain tumor diagnosis and treatment.

Set in Appalachian Ohio, the film follows five-year-old Gibson and his family as they navigate a life shaped by medical routines, caregiving responsibilities, emotional adjustments, and the continuing uncertainty that exists beyond the hospital.

Through the perspective of Gibson’s mother, Taylor, the documentary offers an intimate window into the ordinary moments that define life after treatment. From the rhythms of home to the experiences of school, STABLE reveals how stability is continually negotiated through care, resilience, and the everyday work of being a family.

Rather than presenting medical stability as the end of a difficult journey, the film invites viewers to consider what happens after the immediate medical crisis has passed, when families must establish a new sense of normalcy.

Filmed in immersive 360° video and developed through a collaborative storytelling approach, STABLE places viewers within the family’s everyday environments, encouraging observation, reflection, and a deeper understanding of the experiences that often remain unseen.

Because being medically stable does not mean life stands still.

About the Project

STABLE is the central documentary component of Reframing Stability: Family Life Amidst Childhood Brain Tumor, an MFA thesis project in Communication Media Arts at Ohio University.

The project explores how immersive documentary storytelling can deepen public understanding of the emotional, social, and everyday experiences of families navigating life after a child’s brain tumor.
